2WD and 4WD are shorthand for “two-wheel drive” and “four-wheel drive”. These describe the number of wheels that are powered by the engine. Likewise, 4WD describes when power is sent to both axles (all four wheels), with each wheel able to manually adjust the level of power needed as you drive.

The 4WD Suburban models can’t quite reach the max towing capacity, but all manage to still tow at least 8,000 pounds.
Still, if you choose the 4WD Chevy Suburban, you can get the best of both worlds. The 4WD system will give you more control on your adventures outside of St. Michael but can switch to 2WD on flat, clear road surfaces thanks to the standard Autotrac® single-speed transfer case. Drivers can upgrade to the Autotrac® two-speed transfer case for even more control over when your Suburban shifts from 4WD to 2WD.
