There’s no shortage of vehicle abbreviations and slang terms out there – it can be difficult to be 100% on which model or brand belongs to which umbrella of manufacturers. At Cornerstone Chevrolet, almost not a day goes by when we don’t get asked, “who owns Chevy?” And while to us it brings a moment of comic relief because we’re around the brand all day – in the grand scheme of things, it’s actually a really good question. It’s a wise buying question – why wouldn’t you want to know who owns the brand you’re thinking about spending your hard-earned money with?
Our pledge to all of our Big Lake and St. Michael customers has been to bring transparency to every encounter they have with us – and this example is no different. In this article, we’ll highlight the Chevy brand and touch on age-old topics like GMC vs. Chevy and more!
Depending on the vehicle you drive, you could be in a car, truck, or SUV that’s related to the Chevrolet family. Does GM own Chevy? The answer is yes. Chevrolet is an automotive brand owned by the General Motors umbrella (GM). This century-old American staple has been a driving force in the automotive industry since – well, the very beginning!
So does that mean Chevy is GM? Not quite. Chevy falls under the GM umbrella of automotive brands – along with other brands like Buick, GMC, and Cadillac. That’s why you see so many similarities between GMC and Chevrolet models. If GM was the grandfather, Chevy, and GMC would be twins, while Cadillac would be the slightly more sophisticated sibling.
The Chevrolet brand was started by Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant, officially born on November 3, 1911, in the Motor City, Detroit, Michigan. Now you see why Detroit is called the Motor City. And in the beginning, GM wasn’t always the parent company to Chevrolet.
Chevy was founded independently but quickly merged with GM in 1918 after 7 years in business. GM’s motto was to “offer a car for every purse and every purpose.” We believe their mission was successful and still holds true today.
Over the years, the Chevy lineup has blossomed and branched out into different models and types of cars to become what it is today – a versatile lineup of stunning vehicles of all different types – from pickup trucks to sedans and SUVs to EVs – the Chevy brand truly has something for everybody.
