Auto Mechanic Checking Oil

How Often Should You Change Your Oil?

Changing your vehicle’s oil is one of the most important parts of taking care of your car. Routine oil changes prevent damage to the parts of your engine, and keep car troubles like overheating from happening while you drive around Big Lake. Because of technological developments made over the last decade, the recommended oil change frequency has increased in some vehicles to as much as 7,500 to 10,000 miles. However, it’s still important to always check your owner’s manual for the specifics of your make and model. The team at the Cornerstone Chevrolet service center has written this guide to help you better understand when to change your oil.

The Recommended Oil Change Frequency

The answer to “how often should you change your oil?” can depend on your vehicle and your driving patterns. The general rule of thumb is to change your oil every 7,000-10,000 miles, but if your drives in and around St. Michael regularly include any of the following activities, you may need to change your oil more frequently:

  • Off-roading
  • Commercial use
  • Racing
  • Heavy towing

These activities can result in material like dirt or dust gathering in your oil. This will thicken your oil, causing unpleasant things like an overheating engine while you drive to Buffalo.

Information on Oil Change Frequency

Want more information on oil changes? We’ve listed some extra tips for you here, and if you have any other questions, feel free to contact us; we’ll be happy to help.

  • Check your owner’s manual to see if you should use synthetic or conventional oil on your car. Synthetic oil costs more but lasts longer.
  • Oil eventually breaks down, even when the car isn’t driven on a consistent basis. If you don’t drive often, you should still change your oil at least twice per year.
  • Make sure you change your oil filter whenever you change your oil. Our parts center can assist you in getting the right oil filter for your Chevrolet.

How Often Should You Check Your Oil Level?

It’s best to check your oil level at least once a month. This allows you to avoid any problems when you’re out and about, or catch problems before they become serious. Changes in your oil’s color or texture could be a sign of something serious, so if your oil is low or different than usual, schedule service with us at Cornerstone Chevrolet and we’ll check it for you.
